“Yahoo-yahoos and Twitter kweens”: Internet technologies in contemporary Nigerian fiction

This article examines the representation of Internet technologies in two recent Nigerian comic novels, Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s (2009) I Do Not Come to You by Chance and A. Igoni Barrett’s (2015) Blackass. Departing from founding mythologies as a space global assimilation extending beyond extant postcolonial concerns with technological exclusion or malfunction, demonstrates how facilitate forms subjectification that amplify rather than diminish national consciousness. Reading representations “419” email fraud alongside experimental approach Twitter form, shows both novels critically reflect upon globalizing potentials limitations perspective “post-development” Nigeria. It argues these depict characters dialectically engaging contexts – mobilizing stereotypes address audiences yet, turn, redeploying capital (financial cultural) achieve more localized status.
